Sonequa Martin-Green’s Most Notable Roles

Whether you know it or not, actor Sonequa Martin-Green has always been a part of our lives, with a quiet but determined presence on both the big and small screen.

Getting her start on Law & Order: Criminal Intent, the Alabama native has since grown into a leading lady of TV. Still left wondering, “Where have I seen her before?” In this edition of Did You Know, we give you the scoop on where you’ve seen Sonequa Martin-Greene before.

Sasha Williams, The Walking Dead

Martin-Greene is best known for her role as Sasha Williams, the sister of Tyreese, on the AMC hit series The Walking Dead, which she played from 2012 to 2017. Martin-Green originally auditioned for the role of Michonne, but when Danai Gurira was cast as that character, former show runner Glen Mazzara decided to create an original role exclusive to TV series just for her. Williams was supposed to be a recurring character but by Season 4, Martin-Greene was promoted to a series regular.

Courtney Wells, The Good Wife

In 2009, Martin-Greene was cast as Courtney Wells, an aspiring paralegal and Alicia Florrick’s office assistant, on The Good Wife. This marked Martin-Green’s first role playing an adult character rather than a teenager as with her previous film and TV roles. Martin-Green starred on The Good Wife until 2011 for a total of eight episodes.

Rhonda, New Girl

Fans and experts of American sitcom New Girl will easily recognize Martin-Green as the rowdy prankster and new girlfriend of Winston Bishop from the show’s six season. Martin-Greene was only on the show for a few episodes, but her character Rhonda’s boisterous attitude and outrageous pranks were wildly unforgettable.

Tamara, Once Upon a Time

After wrapping filming for the third season of The Walking Dead, Martin-Green was cast in the second season of Once Upon a Time in which she played the role of Tamara, a woman determined to rid the world of magic. Martin-Green’s Tamara returned briefly in the third season of the show, appearing in a total of seven episodes before returning to The Walking Dead.

Michael Burnham, Star Trek: Discovery

In her biggest casting to date, Martin-Green plays the lead role of Michael Burnham in the Star Trek: Discovery TV series. Not just a big role for herself, it’s a big role for the entire Stark Trek franchise. Martin-Green’s character is the first black female to lead a Star Trek TV series, as well as the first leading character that has never been a Starfleet captain (although she is the captain of the USS Discovery).

In addition to Martin-Green, other presenters for the 2018 iHeartRadio MMVAs include Tyra Banks, Derek Hough, Jenni “JWoww” Farley, and Prince Michael Jackson.

The 2018 iHeartRadio MMVAs go down Sunday, August 26 at 9/7MT on CTV and Much.
