Shawn Mendes Wins iHeartRadio MMVAs Artist Of The Year
Shawn Mendes is officially the iHeartRadio MMVA Artist of the Year.
The Canadian pop heartthrob returned to the charts this year with his self-titled third studio album serving up major radio hits like “In My Blood,” “Nervous,” and the Julia Michaels-assisted track “Like to Be You,” all helping to earn him the title of iHeartRadio MMVAs Artist of the Year.
The 20-year-old pop star appeared on stage following his incredible show-opening performance of “Lost in Japan” to accept the award from co-host Tyrone Edwards, who was joined by Toronto-based artists Francesco Yates and Scott Helman. Mendes beat out Drake, Camila Cabello, Ed Sheeran, Cardi B, and Post Malone for the award.
Looking dapper in black pants and a blue silk shirt, Mendes appeared on stage and thanked the crowd for their support. “Thank you so much. This is Canada, this is home, this means the world to me. Thank you guys so much. Thank you MMVAs. Thank you to everybody in Canada who has been supporting me since I was 15 years old. This means the absolute world to me,” said Mendes. “I love you guys so much.”
Tonight’s win marks Mendes’ fifth iHeartRadio MMVA, with the singer taking home the award for Fan Fave Video for “Something Big” back in 2015 and Best Pop Video and Fan Fave Video in 2016 for his Camila Cabello collaboration “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” The Canadian artist also took home the iHeartRadio MMVA for Best Pop Video last year for his Illuminate hit “Mercy.”
In addition to Artist of the Year, the Toronto native is also nominated for Best Pop Artist or Group, Fan Fave Artist, and Fan Fave Single, and video for “In My Blood” earned a nomination for Best Director.
The 2018 iHeartRadio MMVAs are hosted by Awkwafina and feature performances from 98 Degrees, The Beaches, Bebe Rexha, Brett Kissel, bülow, Meghan Trainor, Shawn Mendes, Kris Wu, 5 Seconds Of Summer, Alessia Cara, Halsey, and Marshmello featuring Anne-Marie.
