Listen To Kris Wu’s EDM Track ‘Chinese Soul’ For ‘Rap of China’
Pop star-turned-rapper—and upcoming iHeartRadio MMVA performer—Kris Wu has shared a patriotic new single ahead of the second season of Rap of China.
“Chinese Soul” is an EDM-influenced track with Wu’s smooth vocals and crisp production adding real dimension to the pro-China tune. Listen to the new single below.
Produced by Liu Zhou, “Chinese Soul” is filled with pounding electronic kick drums highlighting the track’s dance influence, while Wu’s signature laid-back, trap style carries the catchy hook with lyrics like, “You know that I’m a Chinese person / You know I have a Chinese soul / You don’t know much about heaven and earth / You should know that I’m the descendent of the dragon.” It’s the kind of track that holds down Wu with both rap fans and pop fans.
The new song is currently serving as The Rap of China theme song. Taking its cue from The Voice, The Rap of China is Chinese rap competition show wherein contestants are assigned to celebrity coaches who will provide training and guidance throughout the competition.
Despite Season 1 being a success, it was followed by a hip hop ban from the government of China, which advised that people with ties to hip hop culture not be shown on TV. Yet Wu’s patriotic new song, in addition to the previously released nationalist-adjacent track “Great Wall” from Season 1 champion GAI, has put the second season of The Rap of China in a more government-friendly light.
Wu starred as a judge on Season 1 of the show and has since resumed that position for the second iteration alongside rap battle icon MC Jin, American hip hop trio Migos, and more.
