6 Artists Who Slayed Shawn Mendes Covers
Canadian pop singer Shawn Mendes is no stranger to covering the artists that have inspired his own music career.
From Frank Ocean and Kings Of Leon, to Ed Sheeran, and most recently Post Malone, the Toronto singer-songwriter has covered some of music’s top artists and even though he’s become a major pop sensation himself over the last few years, he still continues to put his own spin on some of today’s chart toppers.
Mendes has beautifully covered everyone from Drake to Adele, but this time, we’re turning the tables on the cover artist. While Mendes has done a number of covers, here are some of the biggest artists to cover his music.
Fellow iHeartRadio MMVAs performer Alessia Cara took on Mendes’ “Stitches” in 2015, staying true to the tune’s original melody while letting her powerful vocals do all the heavy lifting. Cara covered Mendes in response to the 19-year-old putting his own spin on her breakout track “Here.” The exchange has us wondering when we will be getting a joint Cara/Mendes stadium tour.
As if one heartthrob performing this heartfelt anthem wasn’t swoon-worthy enough, Charlie Puth covered the lead single off Mendes’ third studio album “In My Blood” during a session at the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge in June. While the original version sees Mendes explode into a passionate chorus, Puth’s piano version keeps its chorus mellower, making the raw lyrics even more emotional.
Sarasota, Florida pop-rockers Boyce Avenue are known for their YouTube covers of classic and contemporary songs. One of their standout covers is that of Mendes’ “Stitches,” featuring fellow American singer Jacob Whitesides. Relying on just a piano and guitar for the backing music, the group pays homage to the Toronto native with a melancholy note-for-note cover.
There’s not much that R&B-pop singer JoJo applies her vocals to that doesn’t instantly become a song you want to put on repeat. Her cover of Mendes’ “Treat You Better” is no exception. The track’s emotional lyrics really shine through in this stripped-down acoustic version when carried by JoJo’s soulful voice.
Actor/singer/DJ Ansel Elgort took to Instagram back in July 2016 to put his own spin on Mendes’ Illuminate track “Treat You Better.” In the clip, the Baby Driver star slows down Mendes’ pop tune letting the smooth piano keys carry his distinctly deep vocals.
British pop singer Conor Maynard recorded a cover of Mendes’ debut Handwritten track “Stitches” back in January 2016. This piano-driven cover sees the song stripped down in such a way that ups the emotional intensity of the lyrics. As well, the cover features a new verse from rapper Anthony “Anth” Melo, adding depth to the pop hit.
But this isn’t the first time Maynard has covered Mendes. The pop singer joined YouTube star Alex Aiono for a cover of Mendes’ 2016 single “Treat You Better,” proving that sometimes two is better than one. The duo put their own spin on the track by adding extra layers of vocals mixed with a new, electronic element.
