Awkwafina Breaks Barriers And Opens The iHeartRadio MMVAs In Style
“Look at you guys!” our iHeartRadio MMVAs host, Awkwafina, exclaimed as she walked on stage in a striped pant-suit following Shawn Mendes’ performance of “Lost in Japan.”
This year has been a crazy one for Awkwafina. She’s co-starred beside the likes of Sandra Bullock and Rihanna, who she refers to as “bad-ass women” in Oceans 8, and starred in the recently released film, Crazy Rich Asians, the first Hollywood film in 25 years to feature an all Asian-American cast.
With the goal of continuing to break barriers, Awkwafina’s iHeartRadio MMVAs debut marks the first time an Asian actress has ever hosted a North American awards show. To commemorate the achievement, Awkwafina decided to do so in true self-depreciating, Awkwafina style.
Calling her outfit “PJs” and asking everyone to stop confusing her with Emmy nominated-Canadian actor, Sandra Oh, Awkwafina reminded the crowd the importance of staying humble—but not before sharing that her grandmother watched Crazy Rich Asians and advises that she get an acting coach.
The 2018 iHeartRadio MMVAs is hosted by Awakwafina and feature performances from Shawn Mendes, Alessia Cara, Meghan Trainor, Kris Wu, Marshmello featuring Anne-Marie, Brett Kissel, bülow, The Beaches, Bebe Rexha, 98 Degrees, 5 Seconds of Summer and Halsey. Watch the show now!
