We love all the videos nominated for MMVAs this year. I guess that’s pretty obvious since we chose them. Anywho, there were some videos that we tooootallly loved, but weren’t included in the MMVA nominations. Still, we think they deserve some time to shine. Take a look at our picks. You never know – these artists could be walking away with some MMVA hardware next year!
Natalia Kills
With no release date in sight we’re starting to wonder when we’re going to hear Natalia Kills full debut album, Perfectionist. Still, the cinematic singer hasn’t forced us to go without. Videos for Mirrors and Wonderland were on high rotation on Much and we loved seeing the UK singer strut her stuff for her first televised performance (ever!) on New.Music.Live. earlier this year. We know that the uber-talented Ms. Kills have a very long, successful career ahead of her and we’ll be shocked if she’s not a MMVA nominated artist next year.
Bedouin Soundclash
Bedouin Soundclash’s fourth album Light the Horizon was one of our top five picks for best albums of 2010. We were surprised that the MMVA nominations rolled out Bedouin-free, especially with their videos for Mountain Top and Elongo impressing the shizz out of us. Still, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the trio back at the MMVAs next year with a huge list of noms.
Sweet Thing
After seeing Sweet Thing open for Brit singer Kate Nash years ago in Toronto we thought, hey – these five Brits are pretty good and their accent is barely audible! We quickly found out that opening for a British singer doesn’t necessary mean the openers are British. We know. Duh. The Toronto pop rock band has been on our radar ever since, and when they released their debut album last year we weren’t the only ones excited. Their undeniably catchy and infectiously happy song Change of Seasons was featured in the trailer for the smash hit Easy A, giving the guys a brand new audience. Their album is one of our faves of 2010 and we’re sure the guys will be picking up some serious MMVA hardware this time next year.
J. Cole
In late 2009 a lot of us started hearing about a new rapper that Jay-Z had signed to his Roc Nation label. If an endorsement from Jay doesn’t make people sit up and pay attention, than J. Cole’s video for Who Dat certainly did. While the young MC has yet to release a full album, let’s face it – it’s 2011. Mixtapes are now all the required listening to catapult you to the top of the hot MC list, ain’t that right, Drizzy? We are already huge fans of Cole, and a debut album from the rapper should solidify his name on next year’s MMVA nomination list.
Emily Osment
Osment’s debut album Fight or Flight was so good that the singer is now thiiiiis close to being thought of first as a pop star and second as Miley Cyrus’ bestie on Hannah Montana, instead of the other way around. We loved the singles Let’s Be Friends and Lovesick and thought the rest of the album was an energetic and thoughtful dance record. Emily presented at last year’s MMVAs, so we know she has our address. We think next year her outfit will look great next to a MMVA award.
