The Weeknd Releases Slick Sci-Fi Video For ‘Secrets’
Its been eight months since The Weeknd dropped his third studio album Starboy, but the iHeartRadio MMVA-nominated artist doesn’t show any signs of slowing down with new music video from the highly celebrated album.
The Weeknd’s latest visual masterpiece is care of the single “Secrets,” which marks the sixth track from the 2016 album to receive the video treatment.
Surprisingly, “Secrets” is not directed by The Weeknd’s frequent collaborator Grant Singer, who has worked on most of The Weeknd’s videos, including his short film Mania. Instead, “Secrets” is directed by Pedro Martin-Calero, who strayed away from Starboy‘s franctic black and red aesthetic to craft a brightly lit video with clean lines and an almost sci-fi angle.
Working with the Spanish director for the first time, the new video has The Weeknd watching his lover as she sleeps and dreams of another man. The video opens with the woman floating onto a giant mattress, where she is observed by a number of robed men or dream guardians. Eventually, The Weeknd makes his way out of the cement building to see a giant cross floating in the snowy sky.
Sampling The Romantics’ “Talking In Your Sleep,” The Weeknd’s “Secrets” is the second video the Toronto singer has shot in his hometown this year. Earlier this month, The Weeknd and Future dropped their video for “Comin Out Strong,” which was shot at the Lower Bay TTC Station. With “Secrets,” The Weeknd and Martin-Calero took over the Toronto Reference Library, turning the space into a stylistic art deco backdrop.
As with his previous videos from Starboy, The Weeknd began teasing the new visuals with movie posters on his social media page last week.
The Weeknd is nominated for three iHeartRadio MMVAs this year, including Most Buzzworthy Canadian, Fan Fave Artist or Group and iHeartRadio Canadian Single of the Year for “Starboy.”
