Get Pumped Up With This Playlist Of Past MMVA Performers

From Our Lady Peace and David Bowie to Nick Jonas and Tegan and Sara, the Much Music Video Awards have been host to some pretty memorable performances (does Lady Gaga’s flaming bra ring a bell?). To get you geared up for the 2017 iHeartRadio MMVAs, we took the liberty of creating a Much-approved playlist inspired by MMVA performers from the last ten years.

No need to thank us – just keep reading and give the playlist a listen!

2007 – Avril Lavigne

Avril’s most infamous MMVA moment might (read: definitely) still be when she decided to moon MMVA attendees and the rest of Canada on the red carpet. But in 2007, she made a triumphant return to Much headquarters to put on a killer performance of her hit single “Girlfriend.”

2008 – Rihanna

2008 was an absolutely amazing year for Rihanna—the Barbadian songstress had just released her breakout album Good Girl Gone Bad the year before and was still being showered in praise by music fans and critics alike. At the 2008 MMVAs, Rihanna graced us with her presence and performed “Take a Bow,” the first single off of the “reloaded” version of Good Girl Gone Bad.

2009 – Lady Gaga

In 2009, the world was only just starting to learn about and appreciate Lady Gaga’s incredible talent—and after watching Gaga perform “LoveGame” and ”Poker Face” while her bra literally erupted in flames, we all realized that the future Joanne artist had a lot more in store.

2010 – Drake

Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Kesha, and Justin Bieber all performed at the star-studded 2010 MMVAs, but we couldn’t pass up an opportunity to talk about the 6ix God himself. Unfortunately Drake’s 2010 rendition of “Over” remains the first and so far only time Drizzy’s performed at the MMVAs, but we’re hoping that’ll change sooner than later.

2011 – City and Colour

Canadian rock group Alexisonfire helped set the MMVA trend of travelling to the red carpet in style in 2004, when they rolled up to the MMVAs in a bona fide ambulance. Seven years later, Alexisonfire vocalist Dallas Green aka City and Colour performed his mellow 2011 single “Fragile Bird,” the video for which he received two MMVA noms the following year.

2012 – Carly Rae Jepsen

Some of us got to know Carly Rae when she was a contestant on the fifth season of Canadian Idol, but the rest of us fell in love with her when she released 2012’s Song of the Summer, “Call Me Maybe.” That means Carly Rae performed the song to a screaming, energetic MMVA crowd over five years ago. Don’t worry, we feel old too.

2013 – Marianas Trench

No MMVA playlist would be complete without Marianas Trench. The pop-punk four piece from Vancouver, British Columbia are known for their wacky MMVA red carpet entrances (remember the hot tub on wheels?) and have made frequent appearances at the MMVAs since 2007. The group performed “Desperate Measures” in 2013, the same year they were nominated for a whopping six awards.

2014 – Lorde

Lorde blew us away with her debut studio album Pure Heroine back in in 2013, and she continued to ride the wave of success when she performed two singles off the album, “Tennis Court” and “Team,” at the 2014 MMVAs. If “Green Light” is any indication, Lorde’s upcoming Melodrama will be just as amazing an album as her first.

2015 – Shawn Mendes

We all know everyone’s crushing on Shawn Mendes now, but we’d like to think that Much was just a little bit ahead of the curve when we invited the Pickering, Ontario native to perform “Stitches” at MMVAs in 2015. Mendes was also nominated for the Fan Fave Artist or Group award that year, but lost nobly to fellow Canadian heartthrob Justin Bieber.

2016 – Alessia Cara

Alessia Cara has been killing it since she performed at the MMVAs last year, and she’s showing no signs of stopping. After performing “Wild Things” on the MMVA stage, the Canadian singer-songwriter has appeared on Saturday Night Live, opened for Coldplay on their worldwide tour, and, oh yeah, sort of become a honourary Disney princess.
