MMVA lunchtime listening: The Heist

Posted on June 12th, 2013

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

Hey music lovers April here! Today’s lunchtime listening is devoted to one of my fave albums of the year. It belongs to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ The Heist.

I was super stoked when I found out the hip-hop duo from Seattle were nominated for International Video of the Year by a Group for their mega-hit Thrift Shop at this year’s MMVAs.

Ben Haggerty scootered straight into my heart when I first heard his mix of dope beats and intelligent lyrics last year when he dropped by New.Music.Live. Although this track lived on The MuchMusic Countdown for weeks, I want you to get familiar with more music from the debut studio album.

Same Love
Easily one of the most beautiful songs I’ve heard in a long time. The coolest thing about Macklemore and Ryan Lewis is that they’re not afraid to stand up for what they believe in and the lyrics of Same Love prove it. Macklemore says it best, “It’s human rights for everybody, there is no difference. Live on and be yourself.” Truth. I dare you to watch this video and not tear up.

Gold featuring Eighty4 Fly
I’ve nominated this jam as my go-to summer song. You can’t listen to it without feeling all warm and happy inside. I do feel like gold, Mackelmore. I do.

Ten Thousand Hours
Macklemore incorporates different genres and instruments in to his music. He even collaborated with violinists and trumpeters for much of The Heist, giving him a distinct sound. Ten Thousand Hours is a perfect example of his magic at work.

Will Macklemore and Ryan Lewis take home an award at the MMVAs? Tune in to the live show on Sunday at 9E/6P on Much in Canada and Fuse in the U.S.
