This Sunday, 2014 MMVA co-hosts Kendall and Kylie Jenner will be joined onstage by seasoned MMVA pros and fellow co-hosts, Lauren Toyota and Scott Willats. We caught up with Lauren to get the backstage scoop on how she handles the biggest night of the year, including her weeks of preps, dress fittings, and exactly what she dreams about during MMVA weekend.
Watch Lauren Toyota and Scott Willats co-host the 2014 MMVAs with Kendall and Kylie Jenner this Sunday at 9E/6P on Much, CTV and CTV GO.
What do you remember the most about your first MMVAs?
The thing I remember most is having to stall and stretch for time by improvising with Danny Fernandes on stage. It’s something we prepare for incessantly during rehearsals and of course, I had to do it my first year. But it all went over smoothly and no one could tell we were going off script. It was kind of the best moment of the night!
How do you prepare for co-hosting duties?
We have 2-3 script meetings and have to have everything memorized after the first read. Then we rehearse our throws over and over again until we’re reciting them in our sleep. On top of the show preparations, I also have to go through a few dress fittings. Other than that I just make sure I’m getting enough rest and eating healthy the week of the show.
How early do you begin memorizing your script?
As I write this it’s Monday before the MMVAs, so I will get my script today and have it memorized by Wednesday.
What does your MMVA weekend look like?
During MMVA weekend I will be booked to do a lot of press for TV and radio through the whole weekend. Then on Friday and Saturday I’m at Much headquarters going through rehearsals from 10 am to midnight. In between my parts in the show, myself and the other hosts get to watch the performers rehearsing, which is magical.
How do you deal with nerves on the big night?
I usually just take big deep breathes, but I’ll be honest. I don’t really get nervous for the MMVAs. I get very unique type of excited about the whole night. It’s a distinct feeling that I only feel when I am about to host the MMVAs.
Who are you most excited to see this year?
I’m really looking forward to seeing Lorde at this years MMVAs, as well as Ariana Grande. Both girls have amazing voices!
What is your most memorable or favourite moment from the MMVAs?
My most memorable moment was from 2011 when I hosted for the first time. I was going out to present an award with Classified and Lady Gaga was accepting it. We were all waiting backstage and she walked over in her towering heels and said hello to me and we chatted for a little bit before we had to go out on stage. She had remembered me from out interview a couple of months before and she was just so kind and genuinely excited to be there.

Missy Elliott is either gearing up to release her first album since 2005’s incredible The Cookbook or she’s just toying with us. We hope it’s the former. The groundbreaking rapper made her triumphant return to the stage during last year’s Super Bowl performance, appearing alongside headliner Katy Perry. Elliott followed up the performance later in […]
To most people, the Super Bowl means the biggest football game of the year. To the rest of us, it means an incredible halftime show, million-dollar commercials, and new movie trailers with seemingly never-ending interruptions from a football game. How rude. It could be difficult at times tonight to separate the movie trailers from the […]
For most artists, performing at the halftime show during Super Bowl 50 would make for a pretty big weekend. But most artists aren’t Beyoncé. The singer stunned in her guest performance during Coldplay’s headlining show tonight, engaging in a sing off with fellow guest Bruno Mars and bringing girl power to an all-male sporting event. […]
When we heard that halftime headliners Coldplay would be joined at Super Bowl 50 by Beyoncé and Bruno Mars, we were first excited, then a bit confused by how it would all work. That’s a lot of different genres in one spot. But it did more than work. It moved. Yup, we were moved. The […]
When Lady Gaga told the NFL yesterday (watch here) that performing the Star Spangled Banner at today’s Super Bowl 50 was one of the biggest honours of her career, she wasn’t kidding. The New York native couldn’t have looked more patriotic unless she dressed up as a replica of the Statute of Liberty. Actually, we’re […]
