One of the best things about red carpet moments (besides checking out the outfits and hoping nobody makes a fool of themselves) is watching the artists’ styles evolve throughout the years. From basic tees to suits and ties, you can’t help but feel proud to see your favourite artists return with a new look and (possibly) a new team of stylists. That’s why we’re getting a little nostalgic and going back in time to see how much the current Fan Fave nominees have grown.
Last year, Alessia Cara was nominated for Video of the Year for her single “Here” (aka the ultimate introvert party anthem). She rocked the tomboy chic look with baggy, zippered pants, a choker and a pink jacket.
In 2014, Arkells attended as presenters looking like the boys you know are too cute to approach but so cool you can’t stop staring. They graced the red carpet dressed simply in buttoned up shirts and sunglasses
In 2015, Ed Sheeran not only walked the red carpet in this suit and tie, but he also delivered a passionate performance and accepted the award for Best International Artist and the Most Buzzworthy International Artist or Group.
In 2015, The Weeknd showed up with a simple all-black everything attitude and left with four awards, including Best Director for “Often” and Best Pop Video for “Earned It”. That he definitely did. Maybe this year he’ll make his second red carpet appearance of the year with Selena Gomez.
Tory Lanez doesn’t disappoint with his remixes or with his attire. He came in 2015 as a nominee for Hip Hop Video of the Year in a crisp all-white ensemble and minimal gold statements with his chain and large watch.
Last year, Shawn Mendes walked away with the Best Pop Video award for his collaboration with former Fifth Harmony member, Camila Cabello in “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” Should he come again this year, we’d like to see him in something more than a basic tee and a motorcycle jacket.
Ruth B made her first appearance at the MMVAs last year in a radiant gown and a cape. That’s a hell of a red carpet debut. This year, she’s nominated for the Fan Fave Artist of the year.
In 2014 Lorde performed “Team” and “Tennis Court” at the MMVAs in white sneakers, a dark purple suit and lipstick to match—an outfit too gothic chic to exclude.
