Meet the designer behind Liz Trinnear’s custom 2014 MMVA gown

Liz Gown

When Much VJ Liz Trinnear debuts her MMVA dress on the red carpet this Sunday, it will represent a very big moment in the career of fashion student Andria Sgromo. The Ryerson Fashion Design student won the top spot in a competition sponsored by H&M to design an original dress for Trinnear for the 2014 MMVAs, a show that will be watched by millions and feature performances from the likes of Lorde, Ariana Grande and Ed Sheeran.

The one of a kind gown was made in conduction with H&M’s Garment Collecting Program, a global initiative that works to reduce the environmental impact from the fashion industry. Clothes of any brand, in any condition, are collected in H&M stores and are re-worn, re-used, and recycled in various ways. Bring your old clothes into an H&M now to get a voucher for $5 off!

We talked to Sgromo about the design process for Liz’s MMVA dress and here’s what she had to say.

What is your design style?

My design style is feminine, glamorous and elegant with an edge that keeps it’s fresh and modern.

How did you begin the process for Liz’s dress?

I had to submit a couple designs when I first applied so I sat down together with Liz and her team and we took aspects of those initial designs and merged them with inspiration from past celebrity red carpet gowns and the general look Liz had in mind to create one amazing gown!

How many revisions has the dress gone through?

The dress has gone through a good handful of revisions at this point. We’ve revised it all, from colour, to fabric choice, to silhouette, to embellishments, but that’s all part of the process when designing a custom gown. It’s all the revisions that have helped to make it come together perfectly.

Your custom dress has been part of H&M’s Garment Collecting Program, right?

Working with H&M has been amazing! Everyone I’ve worked with has been so friendly and helpful. I’ve got to experience so many new and exciting aspects of design thanks to them. The process of creating a dress with recycled garments from their Garment Collecting Program has really pushed my creative boundaries and has taught me a lot. I must say, at times it was a bit of a challenge working with the recycled garments, but for the most part it was really fun trying something out of my comfort zone and the finished product proved to be more rewarding in the end.

What can you tell us about the gown?

I can say that it’s elegant, on trend and super sexy. And it looks amazing on Liz!
