We caught up with Alexis Honce, the woman responsible for making all of our VJs look styling for the music event of the year, the 2013 MMVAs!
How long have you been styling?
I have been styling for five years. Before I started styling I worked in fashion show production and also had my own clothing line.
Who are you styling for the MMVAs?
I am styling all six VJs for the award show. Lauren and Scott are hosting the on stage portion while Liz, T-RexXx, and Phoebe are hosting the red carpet. I am also working with the new winner of the MUCH VJ Search Chloe and it’s fun, as it’s her first award show and I get to see it through her eyes.
What’s your process like for dressing the VJs? Do you create mood boards? Stalk Pinterest accounts?
The first step is making sure I meet each one of the VJs so that I can hear their ideas and see their vision of what they want to look like for the night. They pull inspiration photos that they show me, which gives me an idea of what styles, cuts, and trends they are drawn to, and then I start to do my own research. I research their favorite celebs to see what they are wearing on the carpet and try to find new and interesting designers so that they can wear a one-of-a-kind outfit. I am a huge fan of street style blogs so I make sure to check out what Tommy Ton has been shooting and also what the top editors like Giovanna Battaglia are wearing to the fashion shows around the world for inspiration.
Who do you think will be the best dressed at the MMVAs?
The VJs of course! I am excited to see what Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato will be wearing on the night.
Where do you go to get inspired?
I follow top art directors and stylists in NYC to keep inspired. I am obsessed with Karl Templer (Creative Director) and Fabien Baron (Editorial Director) from Interview Magazine. Literally everything they do is perfection. I also love Marie-Amelie Sauve’s work. Manrepeller.com is another great blog with fresh ideas for everyday style.
Who kills it on the red carpet?
For red carpet I like Rihanna because she always has a little bit of edge. Selena Gomez is another favorite as she always looks amazing on the red carpet and Gwen Stefani is not afraid to stand out. All these woman look like they have fun dressing up and show a lot of personality in their look.
Thanks so much Alexis! We’ll be updating the blog with a behind the scenes teaser look of what the VJs will be wearing so stay tunes! And don’t forget to watch the 2013 MMVAs on Sunday at 9E/6P on Much in Canada and Fuse in the U.S. Don’t miss The MMVAs RED CARPET SPECIAL, which airs just before the big show at 8E/5P.
