Katy Perry And Nicki Minaj Drop ‘Swish Swish’

If you diss Katy Perry, she will come for you. That’s what the pop singer promised earlier this year when discussing her new album, and now she’s stayed true to her word in her new single “Swish Swish.”

Surprising fans with the track at midnight, “Swish Swish” features fellow shade thrower Nicki Minaj, who has never been one to back down from a beef, whether it’s with fellow rapper Remy Ma or whatever pop star thought they’d try taking a shot at the Young Money artist.

Heavily rumoured to be in response to Taylor Swift’s 2014 track “Bad Blood,” which was reportedly written by Swift after Perry ‘stole’ her back up dancers for her tour, “Swish Swish” opens with Katy declaring, “A tiger / Don’t lose no sleep / Don’t need opinions / From a shellfish or a sheep / Don’t you come for me / No, not today.”

We’re honestly a bit confused over the inclusion of a shellfish, but maybe it’s an allergy thing. As for the sheep lyric, following the release of “Bad Blood”, Perry tweeted, “Watch out for the Regina George in sheep’s clothing.”

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Perry didn’t directly respond to being asked whether “Bad Blood” was about her, but did make her future intentions clear. “Well that’s not my question to answer — if it’s about me. I think [my new album is] a very empowered record. There is no one thing that’s calling out any one person,” said Perry.

“One thing to note is: You can’t mistake kindness for weakness and don’t come for me. Anyone. Anyone. Anyone. Anyone. And that’s not to any one person and don’t quote me that it is, because it’s not. It’s not about that. Honestly, when women come together and they decide to unite, this world is going to be a better place. Period end of story. But, let me say this: Everything has a reaction or a consequence so don’t forget about that, okay, honey. [Laughs] We got to keep it real, honey.”

“Swish Swish” doesn’t sound like a song about women uniting, but these are definitely two women we’re excited to see unite in the studio.

The new track is part of Perry’s upcoming fifth studio album Witness, which will be released on June 9. Perry released the official album cover this week showing the singer with an eyeball in her mouth, an image many are calling disturbing. It’s a bit much.

The singer will be embarking on a North American tour for the album starting in September, with the singles “Chained To The Rhythm” and “Bon Appetit” already out. Perry is set to perform as musical guest on this weekend’s finale of SNL along with host Dwayne Johnson.
