Posted on June 14th, 2013

Cody and Victoria

There are a lot of music videos nominated every year at the MMVAs, so to help you familiarize yourself with some of this year’s nominees, we’ve written some important study notes! Here is what you need to know about this year’s nominees for Director of the Year.

Drake – Started From the Bottom (Director: X)
About the song/video: A humourous music video that follows the rise of Drake, Started From the Bottom shows the rapper as he goes from being promoted at a Shoppers Drug Mart to partying with friends at a mansion far away. Based on a true story (kind of).
Fun fact: The billboard we see in the video is still up in Toronto today and is one of the main billboards people see when they drive in and out of the city.

Marianas Trench – Stutter (Director: Kyle Davison)
About the song/video: Continuing from the storyline of their past music videos from their album, Ever After, Stutter is a fun ’40s-inspired clip that shows off their best jive skills.
Fun fact: As with their last album, Masterpiece Theatre, Ever After is a concept album so every song, including Stutter, is part of a continuing storyline.

Rich Aucoin – Brian Wilson is A.L.I.V.E. (Director Noah Pink)
About the song/video: Rich Aucoin takes us on a journey through the life of The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson, recreating album covers and moments in his life.
Fun fact: This video was the first winner of the Prism Prize, which awards the best Canadian music video of the year.

Serena Ryder – Stompa (Director: Natalie Rae Robison)
About the song/video: Serena’s first single and video for his new album, Harmony, Stompa is a stompin’ track and the video cuts between shots of the singer performing and a younger version of her shooting arrows at different symbols.
Fun fact: In a behind-the-scenes clip, Ryder explained the concept behind the album as an idea similar to the idea behind her album – “if you separate yourself into one element, you will not succeed, you will only succeed if you bring in all of the elements together.”

Victoria Duffield & Cody Simpson – They Don’t Know About Us (Director: RT!)
About the song/video: Victoria Duffield and Cody Simpson are on the run from fans and paparazzi in this video for their collaboration, They Don’t Know About Us.
Fun fact: This was shot in Toronto, more specifically, the Royal Ontario Museum.
