Everything You Need To Know About Lady Gaga’s New Film ‘A Star is Born’

If you thought Lady Gaga was done after headlining Coachella, think again. The superstar has been on fire since returning to the charts with her 2016 album Joanne. With a soaring performance at the Super Bowl Halftime Show, collaboration with Metallica at the Grammy Awards and covering Beyoncé’s headlining spot at Coachella, Gaga is having one of the best years in her musical career.

So what could possibly be next for the iHeartRadio MMVAs nominee? How about the leading role in a major motion picture?

Gaga will star alongside Bradley Cooper in A Star is Born, a musical romantic drama that follows Ally, played by Gaga, a talented unknown artist who crosses paths with Cooper’s Jackson Maine—a country star on the decline. As Ally’s star starts to rise, Jack struggles to accept that his best days may already be behind him, putting a strain on their growing romance.

The film is set to hit theatres September 28, 2018, but until then—here is everything you need to know about A Star is Born.

Although Gaga is no stranger to acting, A Star is Born will be her first feature film.

A Star is Born will mark Lady Gaga’s first time as a leading actress in a feature film. The pop superstar first showcased her acting chops on TV with American Horror Story: Hotel and American Horror Story: Roanoke, but now she’s moving on to the big screen.

The film is actually a remake of the 1976 Barbra Streisand classic of the same name.

There are actually a lot of versions of A Star is Born. From the 1937 classic with Janet Gaynor and Fredric March to the beloved 1954 George Cukor musical version with Judy Garland and James Mason, the one that has stood out the most over time is the 1976 version starring Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. The 2018 remake will pay closest resemblance to this version.

Gaga will go by her legal name, Stefani Germanotta, in the film’s credits.

The singer has chosen to use her real name, Stefani Germanotta, in A Star is Born’s credits. A source from Warner Bros. told Variety, “There’s something appropriate about Gaga being credited as Stefani in the role of an unknown ingénue being discovered and turned into a star.” Gaga has yet to explain her decision, but she may be her trying to separate the actor from the pop star.

Gaga has composed and will perform original songs for the film.

If her surprise single “The Cure,” released just months after dropping a full album, still wasn’t enough, get ready for more original music from Gaga. Although the film is a remake, Gaga has composed and will perform original songs in it. There’s no news on what these songs are or what they’ll sound like, but we’re sure Joanne’s stripped-down, soft-rock and slightly country vibes will act as guidance for the soundtrack.

Production for A Star is Born kicked off at Coachella

The film shot its very first scenes at this year’s Coachella music festival, which according to The Hollywood Reporter, “are meant to take place during a country concert in the movie.” Festival-goers were encouraged to wear country-themed attire such as denim, boots and cowboy hats to complete the overall aesthetic of the scenes.

Dave Chappelle, Sam Elliot and Andrew Dice Clay are also set to star in the remake

Gaga and Cooper aren’t the only big names is A Star is Born. They’re set to appear alongside comedian Dave Chappelle, Netflix’s The Ranch star Sam Elliot and Andrew Dice Clay of Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine and HBO’s Vinyl. According to Deadline, Clay will play Gaga’s Italian father and Elliot will take on the role of Bobby, manager to Cooper and Gaga’s characters. Chappelle will play an old friend of Cooper’s.

A Star is Born will be Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut

The American Hustle and Hangover actor is not only starring in A Star is Born, but he’s also directing the film. This will be his first time directing a major motion picture. But Cooper recently took a break from filming to gush about his co-star to Ellen DeGeneres saying, “She’s unbelievable. Oh my god. She’s unbelievable.”

Gaga shared the love right back on her Instagram, posting the first still look of the film with the caption: “I always wanted to be an actress on the big screen. The story of A Star is Born is so special and I’m grateful to Bradley for making my dreams come true. Can’t wait for you to meet Ally.”

Lady Gaga is nominated for Most Buzzworthy International Artist or Group at this year’s MMVAs. Tune in on June 18 at 9E/6P to see if she’ll win!
