canadianstowatchoutfor

1. Majid Jordan

The Toronto-duo first caught the music world’s attention when Drake featured them on his huge single, Hold On We’re Going Home, which they co-produced. Now signed to Drake’s OVO Sound and Universal Music, Majid Al Maskati and Jordan Ullman are poised to bring in a new wave of R’n B. Their just-released video for A Place Like This was funded by our very own MuchFact and acts as the title track off the duo’s upcoming EP.

2. Kiesza

The Calgary native has been the talk of the town in the UK for months now and is beginning to gain traction on this side of the pond. Kiesza has been forcing us to get up and dance with her hit Hideaway, which she performed at this year’s MMVAs. Look out for Kiesza’s new EP, also titled Hideaway, which dropped today.

3. Shawn Mendes

If you haven’t heard of Shawn Mendes yet, just wait a few minutes. The 15 year-old from Toronto is on the cusp of catapulting himself into superstardom, filling the hole recently left by his Canuck pop predecessor, Justin Bieber. #ShawnsFirstSingle was trending worldwide only 15 minutes after his fist single Life of the Party was announced, taking away the top spot from #WorldCup. Mendes’ first Toronto show sold out in 24 hours and he has 30 dates lined up this summer as the opener for fellow teen pop star, Austin Mahone. Keep an eye out for the Toronto teen’s debut EP, set to be released on July 28.

4. SonReal

Saying that its been a big year for Vancouver artist SonReal is an understatement. In the past twelve months, SonReal has released his mixtape One Long Day, scored a Juno nomination for Rap Recording of the Year, passed the 1 million views mark on YouTube for his Everywhere We Go video, kicked off his second tour of the year, which includes 52 dates, and was only second behind Drake and Hedley this year with a whopping FIVE nominations (he took home the award for MuchFact Video of the Year). It’s only a matter of time before SonReal becomes the new face of hip hop.

5. Virginia to Vegas

Singer Derik Baker, the Toronto native behind Virginia to Vegas, is poised to make a big impact on the pop world. His debut single We Are Stars, which features his labelmate Alyssa Reid, is already burning up the charts. Baker’s sound is the perfect fit for today’s Top 40, giving the likes of OneRepublic and American Authors a run for their money.

  • Carly Rae Jepsen Stuns With ‘E•MO•TION B-Sides’

Kanye West boastfully rapped “I forgot better shit than you ever thought of” on his 2005 track “Diamonds From Sierra Leone.” It’s a line that comes to mind repeatedly when listening to Carly Rae Jepsen’s new album, E•MO•TION B-Sides.
