‘This Town,’ ‘Green Light’ And Other Essential Break Up Songs
Breakups can be tough, but sometimes all you need to get through it is some good music. These 2017 iHeartRadio MMVA performers get that. From high-energy pump-up songs like Lorde’s “Green Light,” to pop-rock ballads like Arkells’ “My Heart’s Always Yours,” there’s nothing like a good song to ease the heartache and move you forward.
Here are our favourite breakup songs from some of this year’s MMVA performers that make getting over heartbreak that much easier. Check them out below.
This Town – Niall Horan
Former One Direction member Niall Horan’s first single off his highly anticipated solo album is the kind of breakup song we can all relate to. “This Town” is about missing someone and having to watch them be with someone else. Although the soulful lyrics are quite melancholy (“Waking up to kiss you and nobody’s there / The smell of your perfume still stuck in the air / It’s hard”), the folk sound mixed with Horan’s voice makes it the kind of track that helps you move on. Horan is at his heartbreak best with this track.
Green Light – Lorde
Critiqued as a direct response to Drake’s “Hotling Bling,” this first single off Lorde’s sophomore album Melodrama—an album that may be bigger than 2013’s Pure Heroine—is the kind of breakup song you just want to dance to. The upbeat, high-energy musicality of “Green Light,” in which the New Zealand artist details her own heartbreak, makes those going through a breakup want to run and dance through the city streets right alongside Lorde in the song’s music video.
Black Widow (feat. Rita Ora) – Iggy Azalea
Multi-platinum artist Iggy Azalea takes the typical breakup song to a new level with the vengeful “Black Widow,” featuring Rita Ora. Bad breakup? No problem! Belting your heart out to heavy pop lyrics like,“And I’m gonna show you / What’s really crazy / You should’ve known better / Than to mess with me,” are sure to make you feel better. Although we don’t expect you to take cues from Azalea and Ora and go all Kill Bill on your ex, the catchy track is sure to pump you up.
Passenger Seat – Arkells
Dropping their newest single “Knocking At The Door” earlier last month, Canadian band Arkells continued to create the kind of music that’s catchy, but still good for the soul. From their fourth studio album Morning Report came “Passenger Seat,” a haunting, lovesick ballad that captures the loneliness at the end of a relationship. Between the tinkering piano keys and Max Kerman’s poignant delivery, Arkells nailed the feelings that a break-up brings about—so, why not wallow with them?
Shots – Imagine Dragons
Imagine Dragons seem to be everywhere right now. With the Las Vegas foursome’s exciting singles “Believer” and “Thunder” off their upcoming third studio album, the band is known for dropping stadium-filling tracks. It’s nearly impossible to not dance along to any Imagine Dragons song, and this Smoke + Mirrors breakup track is no exception.
Good Day – DNCE
Although not considered a breakup song, pop-rock band DNCE’s “Good Day” can definitely help ease the pain of a breakup. Frontman Joe Jonas and the rest of this super group sing the feel-good lyrics about turning one’s day around to a catchy, pop beat. When you’re going through hard times, there’s nothing like a good party song to dance to and brighten your mood—“Good Day” is that song.
