Check Out Arkells’ 10 Best Covers
When they’re not touring constantly or making new music, Canadian pop rockers Arkells are no strangers to putting their own soulful twist on hit tunes. From The Temptations’ “Get Ready” to Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space,” Arkells have rightfully earned the title of cover experts. Before the Canadian band takes a break from their tour to grace the stage for their first live performance at the 2017 iHeartRadio MMVAs, check out 10 of their best covers and collabs below.
“Blank Space” — Taylor Swift
Arkells are definitely Taylor Swift fans, so it makes sense that they covered her song in 2015 on Calgary’s X92.9 Take 2 segment. They even remixed the lyrics a bit.
“Drag Me Down” — One Direction
Walk Off The Earth are known for using unique instruments to perform covers and this collaboration in 2015 with Arkells’ frontman (and their friend) Max Kerman was no exception. Along with performing in front of 10 different cameras, they used maracas, a Kalimba and broken beer bottles.
“I Want You Back” — The Jackson 5
Just last month, Arkells performed this song live at a surprise concert hosted by CBC’s q in downtown Ottawa. Apparently the venue filled up within 10 minutes, which is no surprise at all.
“You Make My Dreams Come True” — Hall & Oates
Arkells and Lights performed this song at the 7th annual Andy Kim’s Christmas Concert benefit in 2011 at the Phoenix Concert Theatre. The collaboration was so fun that they got together again a year later at the Theatre of Living Arts.
“Same Drugs” — Chance The Rapper
In an interview with Noisey, frontman Max Kerman declared that Chance the Rapper’s latest album Coloring Book was his favourite of 2016. Kerman said the rapper is “amazing” and that he tries to share the same “joyfulness” that Chance projects in his music.
“Signed Sealed And Delivered” — Stevie Wonder
Arkells are known for covering many Motown classics—even putting out their own Arkells Sing Motown vinyl. They’ve performed this classic numerous times, including at their native Hamilton’s McMaster University, as well as the Kee To Bala and George Stroumboulopoulos’s house.
“Video Games,” Lana Del Rey
This acoustic interpretation of Lana Del Rey’s single was their Valentine’s Day treat to fans in 2012. V romantic.
“Cause=Time” — Broken Social Scene
Arkells performed with Luke LaLonde of Born Ruffians for the JUNO Concert Series back in 2012. The JUNO Concert Series celebrates Canadian artists and encourages collaborations, like this sweet cover here.
“Ms. Jackson” — OutKast
Though this cover took place on the streets of Toronto’s Financial District in 2009 , they also performed this song at the MMVAs after party hosted at the Horseshoe Tavern in 2010, complete with a singalong with Shad and Kesha, who performed her hit “TiK ToK” that year.
“Get Ready” — The Temptations
At that same MMVAs after party, Arkells performed Motown classics like “My Girl” and “Get Ready” by The Temptations, two staples in their Motown repertoire.
